How do The Car Key People open cars?

People often ask us how we get into their car and if there will be any damage. The answer is simple – “We open cars without causing any damage or signs of forced entry”. We never smash windows or use forced entry techniques, you can do this yourself and would not expect to pay a locksmith using such unskilled techniques. Our auto locksmiths are skilled professionals that understand the working of vehicle locks. We use specialist lock picks and tools to gain entry without causing a scratch. Some cars can be opened in a matter of seconds whilst others may take a bit more work. If we use a lock pick to open the door this is a skilled way of bypassing the lock. Lock picking essentially adjusts the inner wafers of the lock to the same position as an inserted key. When the wafers are in the correct positions we can use a tension tool to open the lock.

Lock picks are used on newer cars that deadlock. Deadlocking means the cars doors can not be opened when pulling the inside handle. This is an added security feature and was first used by the likes of BMW and Mercedes. Most cars that are produced in the last few years will become deadlocked, but not all manufactures have incorporated this yet.

If a car is not deadlocked we can use a small air wedge to create a slim gap at the top of the car door. This provides sufficient space to insert a rod and pull the handle from the inside.

We have several highly skilled techniques of opening locked vehicles and each car make will require a unique method. For some cars we can read the lock and cut a key blade to unlock the door, all in a matter of minutes. What could be simpler? How do keys get locked in the car?

Keys can become locked in the car for a number of reasons. The main reason is human error, but there a few situations when the cars electronics malfunction and lock without warning. The number one reason for shutting keys in the car is… “shopping”. Its so easy to put your keys down inside the boot and then load shopping bags on top. Many boot lids close down and will not open again without a key. Some remote fob keys have a separate button that will unlock the boot independently and leave the rest of the doors locked. If the boot is unlocked this way and then closed with the keys inside it will almost certainly become locked.

Another common way to lock your keys in the car is like in the video above, adding jump leads to the car with all of the doors shut. If you need to add jump leads or boost your battery be sure that at least one of the car doors are open. The surge is power often triggers to the locking mechanisms, so make sure you are aware of this.

If car doors are unlocked and the remote locking button accidentally pressed on the key, be sure to have your key in your hand. If you put the key down on the car seat and close the door there is a strong possibility the doors will lock on closure.

Sometimes cars just have a mind of their own – certain cars will lock when the car is driven at a certain speed, but occasionally this feature can malfunction and cause the doors to become locked when the car is stationary and not even running.

Here’s  our summary of the top 5 reasons keys become locked inside cars:

  1. Shopping – keys left under bags
  2. Jump starting – locks cycle and lock keys inside if all the doors are shut
  3. Accidentally knocking a button on the remote key or the cars interior lock button
  4. Vehicle electronic malfunction
  5. Just unlocking the boot and putting keys inside.

Is there any way customers can unlock their own car?

We know you were not planning on locking your keys inside the boot and it’s unlikely you have budgeted for this to happen. We are often asked if there is an easy way for motorists to unlock their own car. In short, the answer is always no. There are lots of videos on youtube that show cars being unlocked with tennis balls and various other crazy ways. The majority of these videos are either fake or performed by professionals with years of practice. If you really want to try getting your keys out yourself you can try wedging the door and using a coat hanger or another type of rod to hook out the keys. We would never recommend this as there is a good chance the car will become damaged and scratched. Car doors seal very tightly and specialist tools are required to safely wedge a gap. Common household objects wont be able to create sufficient space and nearly always cause damage.

What about smashing a window? The costs of replacing a full door window will always be greater than our emergency car unlocking service, not to mention the mess and inconvenience. Small quarter windows can be replaced for less, but if the car is deadlocked this wont help get your car open. If you have locked your keys in your motor get professional help from The Car Key People.
